2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

It used to be the case that if you wanted a big, capable truck to do a job, you’d have to do without the sort of creature comforts we expect to find in our cars and SUVs. However, as the market for pickups continues to expand, with many more people choosing them for recreational and leisure use, the truck is no-longer the Spartan workhorse it once was. One shining example of this is the all-new 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, which is the big brother of the highly-acclaimed and very successful 1500. The 2500 shares the basic cab and interior with the 1500 and also offers three different cabs, two beds and five wheelbases. The 2500 has been completely redesigned for 2015 and is available with two or four-wheel drive and enough different configurations to mean there’s a 2500 for just about everyone.

The exterior and interior of the new truck have undergone a substantial overhaul for 2015, which sees the 2500 retain its chiseled, macho stance while also delivering a more comfortable and accommodating cabin and more efficient aerodynamics to improve performance and efficiency.

But unlike trucks of its size from days gone by, the latest 2500 is available with trim levels that are as upscale as some of the most sumptuous SUVs, although it is still available in fairly basic form for those who want more of a workhorse than a lifestyle vehicle. You can have a 2500 in Work Truck, LT or LTZ trim levels across all bed and cab formats.

While smaller models like the 1500 and its competitors are now being offered with light, compact and more efficient engines than we have been used to, the 2500HD is all about power and capability. That’s why the two engines available are now a 6.0-liter V-8 that gives you 360 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque that is available with a CNG option, and the turbocharged 6.6-liter diesel V-8 unit that brings 397 horsepower and a quite staggering 765 lb.-ft. of torque to the party. The standard transmission is a heavy-duty six-speed electronically controlled unit, with the cost-option being the highly-rated Allison 1000 six-speed automatic.

The 2500 may be big, tough and powerful, but most reviewers make a big point of just how quiet, refined and comfortable this big Chevy can be. The ride is smooth and comfortable and you can add some of the most refined luxuries if you wish such as heated-and-cooled leather seats, along with some of the most advanced safety features also available, like lane-departure warning.

This year’s 2500HD retains independent torsion-bar front suspension, which is still exclusive to the segment. When this feature is paired with the relatively quick, accurate and responsive steering, it lends a connected and confidence-inspiring feel to the whole driving experience.Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control with trailer sway control, side airbags for the front-seat, full-length side curtain airbags, rear adjustable headrests, child seat anchors and tire pressure monitors. Upper trims include the OnStar telematics system, which features automatic crash notification, remote door unlocking, on-demand roadside assistance, turn-by-turn navigation and stolen vehicle assistance.

Available safety features include a rearview camera and rear parking sensors. Also available is the Driver Alert package, which includes forward-collision alert, lane-departure alert, front and rear park assist and a safety alert seat.

If you want the utmost in capability but you’re not prepared to compromise on style, versatility, comfort and upscale features; the 2015 Silverado 2500HD is a hard act to beat.
