How to use Event Viewer utility in Windows XP to view event logs

Although Microsoft has provided an inbuilt utility known as the Event Viewer utility to view the event logs, there is a need for a professional Event log viewer tool to perform advanced functions on the event logs.

Let’s first of all have a general idea of this utility.

Event Viewer is the inbuilt utility, which is provided by Microsoft and comes bundled with Windows. This utility is used to view event logs; using it, you can retrieve information such as event type, event name, event ID, event date and time, etc about an event from the event logs.
Now that we have a basic idea about the Event Viewer utility, let’s see as to how you can view event logs using this utility.

In order to open the Microsoft inbuilt Event Viewer and view the event logs, perform the following steps:

Step1: Click Start -> Control Panel. The Control Panel window will appears.

Step 2: Here select Administrative Tools and go to Computer Management.

Step 3: Select Event Viewer from left panel. The event viewer will display Application, System, Security, ODeag and OSessions event logs. You can now select and view the required event log.

Now that you have come to know how to open the Event Viewer and view the event logs, let us see the process to keep required event logs in a new file for further reference.

In order to view the event details in Windows XP, follow these steps:

Step 1: In the right pane, double-click the event that you want to view. The Event Properties dialog box appears. This event properties dialog box contains the header information as well as the description of the event.

Step 2: To copy the event details, click the Copy button. Open a new document at the desired location and paste the copied details in it.

Thus, by performing the aforementioned steps, you can easily view required event and save them for further use. However, this utility is efficient enough to help you view required events but what if you have the responsibility to keep a check on event logs of 100 computers?
