Newsletter email polls that force you to dail up to the Internet and visit a website to cast your vote do not get a high percentage of newsletter subscribers participating.

Here are some examples of doing a quick poll within your newsletter that get a higher percentage of your newsletter subscribers participating:

Which format do you prefer your newsletter to be in?

To answer, just click the appropriate answer, and send your email ...

   HTML:  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=html

   TEXT:  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=text

(Notice the use of the subject field)

If you have different surveys/polls every month, you can code this into you subject field:

Examples:

Which format do you prefer your newsletter to be in?

  HTML:  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=Nov2000_html

  TEXT:  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=Nov2000_text

Do you believe free ads are effective?

   Yes:  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=Dec2000_Yes

   No :  mailto:poll@demo.com?subject=Dec2000_No

The only work required to set this up, is to create an email address you use exclusively for polls like this.

Another - very professional - way to do this would be to have separate email addresses for all the different answers, for example:

Which format do you prefer your newsletter to be in?

(To take part in this poll, just send an email to the  email address that contains your choice.)

   mailto:IpreferHTML@demo.com

   mailto:IpreferText@demo.com

The results of this poll will be made public in the next issue of this newsletter.

Insider tips:

- Do not ask trivial questions. Who cares about those?

- Ask questions that will truly help you understand your newsletter readership better. Act based on what you learn from your surveys.

- Ask questions that interest your newsletter readers.

- For a real pro touch, ask a question that relates to the content in your newsletter.

- Let your newsletter content be determined by the results of your surveys. Show you are serious about the surveys.
