Many people are aware that the state of health insurance in the United States is undergoing a dramatic change. It's still not clear exactly how deep and long lasting the changes will be, but chances are plenty of people are going to be experiencing some changes in their health insurance coverage. Finding new health insurance can be tough, and some things can make it harder than usual to get insured. In this article you'll learn a few of things, so you can have a better chance.
The factor that is more important than anything else is your employment status, and who you are employed with. The best situation is to be fully employed for a company that offers health insurance as one of its benefits. However, with prices shooting upward, and companies worried about their profits, this is by no means a guaranteed situation. Be sure to understand everything you can about your company and its future plans so you can be aware of what's coming.
One more important factor that can drastically reduces your chances of getting insurance on your own is a pre-existing condition. It is difficult to get coverage, or the coverage you do get will cost you plenty, if you have any existing health condition. If you do have an existing condition, and are currently covered by your employer's plan, treat your job like gold. The insurance you are getting through your work may be much more valuable than you realize.
Another thing that can make it exceedingly difficult is if you've ever been denied coverage in the past. This is a warning sign to insurers that you may be a high risk factor. So even if you do qualify for coverage, it may cost much more than you are willing to pay. If you have been denied coverage in the past, there's not much you can do now. One way to prevent it from happening is to not abuse your insurance, and reserve it only for emergencies, or genuine health needs.
Sadly, the days of low cost insurance may be over for good. A proactive approach is definitely necessary to stay insured at price you can afford. This means be careful at your job, don't over use or exploit your current insurance, and always be shopping around.
