WindWalker Tours
- Traveling to Vancouver Island This Summer?
About
an hour’s drive north of Vancouver, on the “Oceanside” Route
nestled at the foot of the Beaufort Mountain Range, is the sleepy
little community of Deep Bay -- just as beautiful today as when the
First Nations people had their villages here centuries ago.
In
the only private marina in Deep Bay, year-round sightseeing charters
are offered aboard the Wind Walker, a 38’ classic wooden power boat.
“We are covered and heated,” says co-skipper Marilyn Guille, “so
we don’t have to wait until the summer months to cruise.”
From
November to the end of March, the Guilles do Stellar and California
sea lion tours out to Norris Rocks (immortalized in the October/99
issue of Canadian Geographic Magazine) off the south coast of Hornby
Island – which is also a diver’s paradise.
March
marks the beginning of the annual herring run, and a magical time to
be out on the water. The
Baynes Sound herring spawn is one of the largest in North America –
the waters are teeming with the ‘silver of the seas,’ seals, sea
lions and even occasional pods of transient orca. The Pacific turns
turquoise like a tropical island, bald eagles can be seen lining the
shores like little soldiers at attention, and the weather usually
cooperates with balmy spring days and sunshine.
From
April until the end of May, you can book an ‘off-season’
sightseeing cruise or special event charter seven days a week – you
decide the duration and destination, and the Wind Walker will get you
there. “We can take you ashore at one of the oldest lighthouses on
the West Coast; take the kids to Tribune Bay, (recently named one of
the five best beaches in Canada); or have a lunch catered for your
staff while you cruise the coastline,” says Marilyn’s husband
Michael. “Corporate retreats, weddings and school field trips are
all part of our repetoire.”
“The
Wind Walker is much too pretty to have dead fish laying around,”
says Marilyn, “so we don’t do fishing charters … and
there is no alcohol allowed on board, either. This makes us more
family-oriented and women-friendly, and we encourage women's groups,
single mothers, and women travelling solo to contact us.”
Beginning
in May, you can also take a Sunday Brunch or Sunset Dinner Cruise, or
plan a multi-day ‘getaway’ – with or without your sea kayaks.
The Wind Walker does ‘mother-shipping, and nicely accommodates one
couple.
During
September and October, you can participate in a Murder Mystery Cruise,
with a script patterned after the area’s actual nautical history
books – and if it gets stormy, so much the better. And then, of
course, the sea lions return in November.
