Alcohol has an addictive nature. It means that weaning yourself
off of it will be a hard task unless you understand the repercussions of such a
move. When you quit drinking, the first reaction is withdrawal symptoms. Your
body will not understand why you cannot quench it the way you are used to and
why the alcohol levels have to go down all of a sudden.
That is when your mind begins to work against your plan to quit drinking because it sees this move as a change from the thoughts and actions you have been undertaking. Some of the withdrawal symptoms are nausea, headaches, nervous reactions as well as anxiety. When the alcohol level goes down completely and you still stick to your plan to quit drinking, the symptoms might get out of hand unless you have an efficient medically approved way to control them.
The situation might be unbearable to the point of searching for any way to
get a pint or two. Therefore, when you quit drinking but keep a bottle of
alcohol in your office or house, the withdrawal symptoms will push you too hard
that you take a pint to relieve them; and end up where you started. In addition,
if you are still seeing the beer buddies you hanged out with and visiting venues
that trigger the urge to drink, you will be pushing self-control to the limit.
The worst scenario is when the withdrawal symptoms and cravings are too much that you end up in a relapse. You ignore the plan to quit drinking and even more than you used to. It will be a violent response to recover the days you have stayed without a drink.
At that moment, you begin to doubt the benefits of keeping away from the
drink and if you are not careful, you start resenting the idea. For some, the
guilt of not sticking to the plan to quit drinking pushes them to taking drinks
in secret especially when the individual has promised friends and family that he
or she will not drink.
It might also lead to illegal ways to acquire drinks such as stealing money if the monetary allowances had been limited in order to quit drinking. For that reason, it is important to undertake this task soberly. It should be more about individual fulfillment and not about pleasing friends and family members.
This is because when the situation is too hard to bear, you begin to resent
yourself for failing and low self-esteem kicks in. When you set individual
goals, you know how much you can go without falling off track. In addition, you
will know the reasons for relapses and how you can tailor the plan to quit
drinking to your needs.
Since there are many solutions in the market all claiming to be fast and easy, you have to check how suitable the plan is to your lifestyle. This is because aside from the physical change, you will also have a lifestyle change to suit your plan to quit drinking. For instance, keep away from activities that give you desire to drink.
