Volunteering on community service projects in your city can be a fulfilling way to give something back and make your city a better place to live. There are many volunteer opportunities available in cities across the country. For example, in the city of Champaign-Urbana volunteers can work with Big Brothers Big Sisters as mentors for young people. Mentors must go through a comprehensive screening process as well as a training program which will provide them with skills to help build a personal relationship with a young person int heir community who needs support and guidance.
Big Brothers Big Sisters offers support for both the volunteer mentor and the child throughout their mentoring relationship. Volunteer mentors are asked to commit to the position for at least one year, but many mentors continue the relationship until the child graduates from high school.
Another great community service organization called The Road Home provides many opportunities for those who want to volunteer helping the homeless. This organization offers many one time group volunteering events, as well as long term positions. Anyone who wants to volunteer with The Road Home must first complete an orientation before they can begin work.
Volunteers are currently needed to work at the front desk of the shelter for about 2 hours each week. These volunteers are responsible for greeting other volunteers, residents and donors. They also help answer phones and perform other light clerical duties. Front desk positions are available during shelter open hours, and require a minimum commitment of at least 3 months for 2 hours per week. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
Volunteer ideas for the holidays in Charlottesville, Virginia include gift wrapping positions with the Enrichment Alliance of Virginia. These volunteers are needed to help wrap donations for the organization's Summer Mentoring Program. The program is run by The Enrichment Alliance in partnership with the Charlottesville Parks and Recreation department and Camping for All.
The goal of the program is to provide trained mentors for kids with special needs so they will not be left out of the many fun summer activities which other kids enjoy. The minimum age for the gift wrapping positions is 17 years old, but those who are at least 15 may participate if they are accompanied by an adult.
