AndhraPradesh NRI Forum(www.andhrapradeshnri.org) welcomes the decision of India Govt to give voting rights for NRIs. Voting rights have been a long-standing demands of NRIs who were living abroad due to employment, education or other purposes.
Under the current law, an NRI is struck off the voters' list if he stays outside the country for more than six months. This rights are very crucial for NRIs, as most of them don't have voting rights in their adopted places and lost voting rights in India as they are abroad more than six months. This left them with no representation to articulate their problems. Giving voting rights to NRIs fulfils the constitutional obligation of giving voting rights to every citizen.
Considering the unique nature of problems for NRIs, NRI voice may not be adequately represented in various legislative bodies. Andhra Pradesh NRI forum requests Govt. to consider to increase the number of seats for nominated members and for recommending NRIs.
Andhra Pradesh NRI forum represents the voice of NRIs from Andhra Pradesh. Manmohan Singh statement acknowledges that NRIs from Andhra Pradesh are the stake holders in the current turmoil of Andhra Pradesh. Encouraged by Manmohan Singh statement, Andhra Pradesh NRI forum requests the centre to involve NRIs in the wider consultations for bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh
