To work out an unhealthy relationship, you should discover the root of the problem, admit that you have responsibility, forgive your partner, overcome all of your negative behaviours, develop positive habits for your relationship, and move on together.

An unhealthy relationship is something that everybody would want to avoid. It can cause stress and be emotionally draining for the people involved. Unhealthy relationships, however, can still be mended. The greatest relationship advice for men in an unhealthy relationship is for them to exert effort in fixing it. These are some of the ways that can help you and your partner work things out:

Discover the root of the problem

Some couples may already know what's really happening in their relationship, while others need to devote adequate time to discover where things started to complicate. The most crucial thing is to determine the underlying cause behind the problem and not simply focus on the effects. One sample scenario would be that you are annoyed at your significant other for not spending enough quality time with you, but this could not be the problem in itself. Your insecurity and desire for more assurance from your partner could be the root cause of the problem.

Accept responsibility

Once you find out the underlying cause, don't use it as a reason to be angry or an opportunity to blame your partner. Learning to accept responsibility is the key. Admit that the relationship needs working out and that you might have contributed to the problems. Most importantly, accept that you can still do something to make your relationship work.

Remember that forgiveness is essential

An act that is often forgotten but is nonetheless important to fixing your relationship is to forgive. It is necessary that you learn to let of any ill feelings towards your partner if you want to think of a clear solution for your problems. Healing all your emotional wounds could take time, but if you foster a forgiving spirit, you are making your first steps towards recovery.

Conquer your negative behaviours

Everyone has habits and traits that can be psychologically or physically destructive to a relationship. Reflect and try to discover the behaviours that you have that are not constructive for the relationship or are hurting you as a couple. Devote enough time to discover the reasons of why you do the negative habits and convince yourself to stop doing them.

Adopt positive relationship habits

You should develop positive habits to replace the negative behaviours that you have overcome. Looking at your relationship in a positive light or doing simple acts of kindness are just a few of the healthy relationship habits that you can do. The bottom line is that you cultivate trust and start supportive habits that are conducive to developing a healthy relationship.

Move on with your partner

The previous steps should have given you enough time to gain new insights and dispel negative thoughts and actions from your life. The final and most important step now is to move on together with your partner to a new phase in your relationship. Don't bring up your last failures and mistakes but be sure to learn from them. Consider this a time for you and your partner to start fresh and begin a healthy relationship together.

Having a positive mindset and devoting enough time can help work out an unhealthy relationship.
