It’s a contagion
that has reached from one end of the globe to the other. It’s World Cup
Madness.
It’s here and it’s catching!
World cup mania can be observed all over the internet, on television, in shops,
where many different foods are being branded with such names as Goal and
Winner, on buses, in railway stations, at airports – just everywhere you look,
there is reference to this phenomenon!
You’ll find the best World Cup Soccer Fan shop around here, where you
can order all your World Cup memorabilia.
But just exactly
what does all this mean? For South Africans it has reached fever pitch!
The stadiums are ready and have been tried
out in pre-competition matches.
Infrastructure has been upgraded and improved to cope with the expected
influx of Soccer fans and hopes are high that South Africa will continue to
benefit long after the last goal has been scored.
For the first
time, this long-awaited event will take place in Africa, which is surprising
since Africa boasts some stiff competition for the coveted trophy. Teams from
the Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Nigeria are training hard and have high hopes of
keeping the FIFA trophy in Africa.
The South African
team is not seen as one of the likely winners, but, the battle cannot be won
before it is fought and a South African win would not be the first
international surprise to come out of a FIFA World Cup competition. In order to
make sure that the Nation of Rainbows meets all the criteria for this
prestigious event, South Africa have established 10 stadiums all across the
country, that all meet the required standards in every way and all can hold
their own in a worldwide comparison.
The whole event is
likely to be a colourful and rhythmic affair, and the streets of South Africa
are now ringing to the sounds of ‘iDiski’ a new street dance based on football
moves! The word iDiski means soccer or football and this dance is filled with
all the emotion and raw energy that football evokes in the townships.
The opening
Kick-off Concert was held in the Soweto Stadium where national and
international artists performed to about 30 000 football supporters most of
them waving green and gold banners, the flag of the local team, Bafana-Bafana.
Dancers and drummers kept up an electric rhythm and world-renowned trumpeter,
Hugh Masekela thrilled the crowds with his 1968 hit song ‘Grazin in the Grass’.
The atmosphere was one of excitement and
spirit, with the unusual
vuvuzela trumpets filling the stadium with
their distinctive elephant trumpeting!
The
vuvuzela is thought to be a modern day version of the
ixilongo
or
mhalambala or kudu horn that was traditionally used to call villagers
to war or meetings.
June 11 is the big
day for the World Cup, the day of the Kick-off, but it also marks other
historic occasions.
Forty-six years ago
to the day, former South African President, Nelson Mandela was convicted of
sabotage and sentenced to imprisonment on Robben Island and, on the same day
twenty-four years later, the famous Free Mandela Concert was held at London’s
Wembley Stadium.
But, on this day,
June 11, 2010, South Africa and the world are all succumbing to the mania and
fever of this historic Fifa World Cup and everyone is wondering who will be
triumphant.
